Mobile Device Destruction

NAID AAA Certified destruction for iPhones, iPads, Android phones, tablets, and smartwatches — cryptographically erased for resale or shredded to ≤6mm for end-of-life.

A factory reset is not data destruction. Modern smartphones and tablets concentrate the most sensitive data your organization holds — corporate email, SSO tokens, MFA seeds, ePHI, cardholder data, and access credentials — inside flash storage, secure enclaves, and eSIM containers that survive a wipe-and-reset cycle. For HIPAA, PCI-DSS, GLBA, and SOX-regulated organizations, only NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 'Purge' (cryptographic erase + verification) or 'Destroy' (physical shredding) is considered compliant disposition.

Phoenix ITAD destroys every major mobile form factor — iPhones (including eSIM-only and USB-C generations), iPads, Android phones and tablets, Apple Watch and Wear OS smartwatches, cellular hotspots, and rugged field tablets. We release Apple Activation Lock, Google FRP, and your MDM enrollment, sanitize to the standard you specify, and issue an IMEI- and serial-level Certificate of Destruction backed by our chain-of-custody program. Working devices feed our value recovery program so your refresh nets out to zero — or a credit.

Our 5-Step Mobile Destruction Process

  1. Step 1

    Secure Pickup or Return Kit

On-site pickup across Arizona or pre-paid tamper-evident return kits for remote employees.

  2. Step 2

    IMEI / Serial Reconciliation

Every device scanned at dock-in and matched against your inbound manifest with zero-tolerance variance.

  3. Step 3

    MDM & Activation Lock Release

Devices deprovisioned from Jamf, Intune, Kandji, Workspace ONE and released from Apple/Google account locks.

  4. Step 4

    NIST Purge or Physical Destruction

Cryptographic erase + verified wipe for resale, or shred to ≤6mm for end-of-life and locked devices.

  5. Step 5

    Certificate of Destruction

Serial- and IMEI-level CoD signed by NAID AAA operator, NIST 800-88 mapped, retained 7 years.

Factory reset is NOT compliant destruction.

A factory reset satisfies NIST 800-88 "Clear" — adequate for low-risk consumer reuse, but explicitly insufficient for ePHI, cardholder data, GLBA-covered records, or any device leaving the custody of a regulated organization. NIST "Purge" or "Destroy" is required. Phoenix ITAD performs both.

Mobile Device Destruction FAQs

Mobile device destruction is the physical or cryptographic sanitization of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and cellular hotspots to a NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 'Purge' or 'Destroy' outcome. A factory reset is a 'Clear' action — it removes user-visible data but leaves recoverable artifacts in unallocated flash blocks, the secure enclave, baseband firmware, and eSIM containers. For HIPAA-, PCI-DSS-, and GLBA-regulated organizations, only NIST Purge (via cryptographic erase + verified wipe) or physical destruction (shredding to ≤6mm) is considered compliant. Phoenix ITAD performs both, witnessed and certified.

Yes. We sanitize and destroy every major mobile form factor: iPhones (all generations including USB-C and eSIM-only), iPads and iPad Pros, Android phones from Samsung, Google, Motorola, OnePlus and others, Android tablets and Chromebooks-as-tablets, Apple Watch and Wear OS smartwatches, cellular hotspots and MiFi devices, and ruggedized field tablets (Zebra, Panasonic Toughbook, Getac). Each device is reconciled by IMEI/serial, sanitized to the standard you specify, and listed line-by-line on the Certificate of Destruction.

Phoenix ITAD removes Apple Activation Lock, Google FRP, and MDM enrollment (Jamf, Intune, Kandji, Workspace ONE) as part of every mobile engagement. Bring your MDM admin or grant temporary delegated access and we'll deprovision each device from your tenant before sanitization. Locked devices that cannot be released are routed directly to physical destruction at no extra cost — they never leave the chain of custody and never resurface in the secondary market.

Modern smartphones and tablets encrypt user data at rest with a device-specific key stored in the Secure Enclave (Apple) or Trusted Execution Environment (Android). A cryptographic erase destroys that key, rendering the encrypted ciphertext mathematically unrecoverable — this satisfies NIST 800-88 'Purge' and preserves resale value for value recovery. Physical shredding pulverizes the device — including the logic board, NAND flash, and baseband — to particles ≤6mm, satisfying NIST 800-88 'Destroy' for top-secret, classified, or zero-resale-value devices. We recommend cryptographic erase for working devices going to buyback and physical shredding for damaged, locked, or end-of-life inventory.

Yes. Our mobile shred trucks come to your Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, or statewide Arizona location and destroy phones, tablets, and watches in your parking lot under your representative's witness. For larger fleets (500+ devices) we set up an on-site secure-area sanitization station with NIST-validated wipe stations and a portable shredder. Either way, a NAID AAA Certified operator runs the engagement and a preliminary Certificate of Destruction is handed to you before the truck leaves.

Absolutely. Phoenix ITAD operates a closed-loop value recovery program: devices that pass functional QC and aren't earmarked for physical destruction are cryptographically erased to NIST Purge, refurbished, and resold through our certified secondary-market channels. Net proceeds are returned to you against your engagement invoice — many enterprise mobile refreshes net out to zero or a credit. Locked, broken, or sensitive-program devices are routed to destruction and recycled for material recovery instead.

Every Phoenix ITAD mobile engagement is performed under NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 (Clear, Purge, or Destroy), NAID AAA Certification, and R2v3 for downstream material recovery. The resulting Certificate of Destruction is accepted as primary evidence for HIPAA §164.310(d)(2)(i), HITECH, GLBA Safeguards Rule, PCI-DSS 9.8.2, SOX §404, FERPA, FACTA, and DoD 5220.22-M. Each line item on the CoD references the specific clause satisfied so auditors can map directly from device to regulation.

We provide a turnkey mobile end-of-life program: pre-paid, tamper-evident return kits sent to remote employees and branch offices, a chain-of-custody portal that tracks every device from issue to destruction, MDM integration that flags devices flagged for disposal and remotely locks them in transit, and a serial-level Certificate of Destruction filed against each user record. The result is a closed loop — no working phone with corporate data ever ends up in a desk drawer, on eBay, or in a landfill.

Who we can serve: businesses only

We collect from offices, facilities, warehouses, server rooms, and data centers. We do not service residences — no household pickups and no consumer drop-off. Free pickup runs roughly 60 miles from our Scottsdale processing facility (all of Maricopa County), with scheduled routes for the rest of Arizona. Minimum pickup is 5+ devices, one pallet, or a single rack. Pickup criteria →
