Different media require different destruction methods. We select the correct NIST 800-88 / NAID AAA approach for every drive.
Degaussing (HDD only)
NSA-evaluated degaussers neutralize magnetic media — instantly and irreversibly destroying data on traditional hard drives.
NIST 800-88 Secure Erase
Cryptographic and firmware-level erase for SSDs and NVMe drives, verified to leave zero recoverable data.
Physical Shredding
NAID AAA shredding to particle sizes that meet or exceed NSA/CSS standards — for HDDs, SSDs, and tape.
Certificate of Destruction
Serialized, audit-ready certificate for every drive, mapped to your asset inventory.
Storage Media We Accept
From a single USB stick to thousands of enterprise SSDs, we destroy every common storage format.
Audit-Ready Certificate of Destruction
Every drive — wiped, degaussed, or shredded — is logged with its serial number and tied to a serialized Certificate of Destruction. Our certificates are accepted by auditors for HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, FERPA, and PCI-DSS compliance reviews.

Hard Drive Destruction FAQs
HDDs (spinning magnetic platters) can be degaussed or physically shredded — degaussing destroys the magnetic field, rendering data unrecoverable. SSDs and NVMe drives store data in flash chips and are NOT affected by degaussing; they require either NIST 800-88 cryptographic erase / firmware secure erase, or physical shredding to particle sizes ≤ 2mm. We select the correct method per drive type and document it on the Certificate of Destruction.
Yes. Phoenix ITAD operates under NAID AAA Certification — the highest standard for secure data destruction. This covers personnel screening, written policies, audited operational security, insurance, and chain-of-custody controls. Every shredding event is performed by background-checked technicians under video surveillance.
Yes. Every single drive — HDD, SSD, NVMe, or LTO tape — receives an individually serialized Certificate of Destruction. The certificate includes the drive's serial number, make/model, capacity, sanitization method (wipe, degauss, or shred), date, witness, and our NAID AAA / R2v3 audit references. Certificates are audit-ready for HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, FERPA, and PCI-DSS.
Yes. We offer mobile on-site shredding with a NAID AAA certified shred truck that comes to your facility. You and your security officer can witness every drive being shredded to NSA / CSS approved particle sizes. We provide a real-time inventory and Certificate of Destruction before we leave the site.
Shredded drive material is sorted into ferrous metals, aluminum, circuit board fragments, and rare earth magnets. Each stream is sent to our R2v3-certified downstream recycling partners for responsible material recovery. Phoenix ITAD maintains a strict zero-landfill policy — nothing from your destroyed drives ends up buried.
Who we can serve: businesses only
We collect from offices, facilities, warehouses, server rooms, and data centers. We do not service residences — no household pickups and no consumer drop-off. Free pickup runs roughly 60 miles from our Scottsdale processing facility (all of Maricopa County), with scheduled routes for the rest of Arizona. Minimum pickup is 5+ devices, one pallet, or a single rack. Pickup criteria →
